Irbid National University holds a seminar entitled Distance Learning in Light of the Corona Pandemic, Challenges and Requirements for Success Using the Zoom Platform

Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mansour Al-Khasawneh, President of Irbid National University, the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the university organized a dialogue seminar entitled (Distance Learning in Light of the Corona Pandemic, Challenges and Requirements for Success) in which His Excellency the former Minister Prof. Abdullah Oweidat / Amman Arab University, and Prof. Dr. Arafat Aujan – President of Mutah University, participated using remote Zoom visual communication technology.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Al-Khasawneh, the sponsor of the symposium, welcomed the participants, and wished to protect the country and its people from all diseases, and praised the great efforts made by His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein with his directives to the government apparatus, the army, security, health, and all sectors to get out of the Corona pandemic that swept the whole world, and praised all faculty and administrative staff at the university for their efforts and offers for the sake of the advancement of the country and the university.

Prof. Dr. Nashat Abu Hassouna, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University, gave a speech in which he welcomed the attendees, in which he said: This year witnessed an increasing use of social networks due to the pandemic, which led to a modification in the philosophy of education, as education is carried out through these networks, and it is no secret to anyone that these networks have multiple capabilities and huge advantages that work to bring about excellence and creativity, so their employment and integration to support education has become a primary goal to facilitate the teaching and learning process, and that Colleagues in all universities have created an interactive learning environment in which students assume their educational responsibilities and it became clear to them that there are a set of challenges that limit the effectiveness of the teacher and the student and limit their success.

His Excellency the former Minister, Prof. Abdullah Oweidat / Amman Arab University, spoke about the psychological and social effects of the use of distance learning on Jordanian university students in light of the Corona pandemic, in which he said that this pandemic has introduced the world with a set of sudden tremors in all aspects of health, psychological, social, economic and educational life … He added that we have a complete change in the roles of teachers and supervisors and the relations between the parties to the educational process, pointing out that the Ministry of Education was not ready for distance education, so one of the most prominent effects of this pandemic was how to develop the human and social aspects of students by distance learning in cyberspace.

Prof. Dr. Oueidat presented the manifestations of the impact of the pandemic on the lives of students by relying on family and colleagues instead of self to obtain the mark, isolation, depression, domestic violence, clinging to the generation of comrades, and the transition from school culture to virtual culture, and that the educational aspect, specifically in the achievement aspect of students, has become about 30% missing in distance learning, and that 38% of students did not receive anything from electronic platforms, and all this led to students relying on parents in a way They were not used to it.

For his part, Prof. Dr. Arafat Awjan / President of Mutah University, gave a speech under the title (Towards a National Strategy for Distance Education), in which he stressed the need to go to blended learning, but not in the way of its current practice, which suffers from a lot of deficiency, as it needs an approved evaluation and development that requires changing the laws and instructions that are still prepared in traditional education, and reviewing the list of them, as it has become a priority today, whether with or without Corona, and called for focusing on the psychological and technological dimension of the interaction industry And harmony between teachers and students, as well as facing the negative challenges facing distance education.

At the end of the meeting, which was moderated by Dr. Muhammad Al-Rosan / College of Educational Sciences, and attended by the deans of the faculties, a large number of faculty members, administrators, and university students, both Dr. Oueidat and Dr. Aujan praised Irbid National University, indicating that it and the efforts of those in charge of it have become an example to be followed and a cause for pride and pride among universities in the field of e-learning, and they thanked the presidency and the various university cadres, for this hosting, and wished the university and all its employees more progress and prosperity, and that the country will soon enjoy getting rid of The symposium concluded with the adoption of the following points:

  • Work on restructuring the study materials and how to implement them in line with e-learning technologies, and providing tools for communication, cooperation and partnership between the teacher and students and between the students themselves.
  • Attention to training and qualifying teaching staff in the fields of content development and design, managing interactive e-learning, and developing the necessary curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Develop clear, fair, transparent and accurate mechanisms for remote student assessments that comply with the foundations of educational evaluation and measurement.
  • Setting legislation governing distance education is concerned with setting quality standards for programs and determining the technical and human requirements that must be met by educational institutions and students before starting to use this type of education.
  • The need to provide high-quality infrastructure and communication packages to ensure the success of distance education, in cooperation between the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, Communications, universities and telecommunications companies.
  • Establishing a standard national educational platform that will be an approved reference for distance learning and allow content sharing, creating educational distances available to all, exchanging experiences and unified national interaction with well-known international educational platforms abroad.
  • Attention to the subject of cybersecurity and intellectual property rights in any electronic system dedicated to distance education.
  • Conducting objective and accredited scientific studies to evaluate the distance learning experience during the past period and publish its results to benefit from the lessons learned from this period.
  • Setting criteria for evaluating e-learning programs.
  • Bridging the digital divide between teacher and student.
  • Overcoming the alienation of the academic mind of production and ideas.
